Step Up Your Game: A Podiatrist’s Guide to Preparing Your Feet for Cricket Season

As cricket season approaches, players—both juniors and adults—are eager to get back on the field. However, the sudden increase in activity can lead to foot and ankle injuries if your lower limbs aren’t prepared for it. Read on for a podiatrist’s perspective on some tips and tricks for preparation for the upcoming cricket season.

Conditioning Your Feet and Ankles

Cricket involves quick sprints, sharp turns, and extended periods of standing, all of which put stress on the feet.

Strengthening and stretching exercises are essential to prepare for the season. Things you could focus on include:

  • Calf Raises: Strengthens the calves and Achilles tendons.
  • Ankle Circles: Increases ankle flexibility and mobility.

These exercises help build endurance and prevent common injuries such as sprains, strains, and Achilles tendonitis.

Choosing the Right Cricket Footwear

As we know, footwear is paramount to an enjoyable experience in whatever sport we choose to partake in.

Cricket shoes should offer excellent support and be designed for your specific playing role (bowler, batsman, or fielder). Look for:

  • Cushioning: Shoes with good shock absorption protect the heels and reduce stress on your joints.
  • Proper Fit: Shoes that are too tight or too loose can lead to blisters, corns, and foot fatigue. Ensure a snug but comfortable fit.
  • Spikes: If your role requires spikes, ensure they are properly fitted and do not cause pressure points, which can lead to foot injuries such as sesamoiditis.

For juniors, make sure to check their shoe size regularly, as their feet grow quickly and poorly fitting shoes can cause long-term foot issues.

Injury Prevention and Care

Blisters, heel pain, and shin splints are common during cricket season. To prevent these:

  • Wear Moisture-Wicking Socks: They help keep the feet dry and reduce friction, minimizing the risk of blisters.
  • Custom Orthotics: Orthotics might be an option if you feel you place too much pressure in certain areas of your feet, causing them to ache
  • Ice and Rest: After intense practice sessions or matches, ice sore feet and ankles to reduce inflammation and prevent overuse injuries.

By focusing on foot health and proper preparation, you can ensure a successful and injury-free cricket season, whether you’re a junior or an adult player.
