Skip Into Summer: Make sure your feet are healthy and happy in the warm weather!

Summer is the season to kick off your shoes, feel the sand between your toes, and enjoy the warmth beneath your feet. But the sunny months can also bring challenges for your feet—from sunburn to blisters. As a podiatrist, I see the foot health concerns that arise as temperatures rise. To keep your feet in tip-top shape all season long, follow these essential tips:1.

Protect Your Feet from the Sun

While you’re basking in the sunshine, don’t forget your feet! The skin on your feet is sensitive and can burn just as easily as other areas. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your feet, paying special attention to the tops, soles, and the area between the toes. Don’t neglect this step, especially if you're wearing sandals or going barefoot.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration isn’t just for your body—it’s crucial for your feet too! When you're properly hydrated, your skin stays healthy and less prone to cracking or peeling, which can be painful and potentially lead to infections. Drink plenty of water and keep an eye on any dryness, especially around the heels. Use a good foot moisturizer to maintain skin elasticity and prevent cracks.

3. Care for Calluses & Blisters

The heat and humidity of summer can create friction, leading to blisters and calluses. If you’re prone to blisters, wear moisture-wicking socks or shoes with a better fit to avoid rubbing. For calluses, you can gently exfoliate your feet with a pumice stone after a shower or bath, but avoid over-scraping as this can lead to injury. The best option for this would be to come and see a podiatrist to get professional debridement of your callus.

4. Practice Good Foot Hygiene

Summer means sweaty feet for many, and bacteria love warm, moist environments. Ensure you wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day, paying special attention to the areas in between the toes. After washing, apply an antifungal powder or spray if you’re prone to athlete’s foot. Don’t forget to change socks if they become wet and let your shoes air out to avoid bacterial buildup.

5. Barefoot Care: Walk Wisely

While going barefoot is tempting, especially at the beach or poolside, be very careful. Walking barefoot on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt can lead to strain on your feet and joints. Similarly, walking barefoot in public areas like pools or locker rooms can expose you to fungal infections like athlete’s foot or plantar warts. Always wear flip-flops or water shoes in these environments to avoid any nasty infectionsAll in all, we're fast approaching the end of the year and we all deserve a great break!  Follow these tips to ensure the summer break is a safe and enjoyable time for yourself and loved ones.  If you're needing a general foot checkup before holiday season, feel free to make an appointment with one of our star podiatrists
